As outlined in Executive Order 2020-05-CTH (Order on Equality) and the 2024 Executive Order Addendum, it is in the best interest of the Cherokee Nation to prioritize equal opportunity and equal protection under the law in our policymaking, programs, and initiatives.
The Principal Chief’s Task Force to Examine the Impact of Slavery on Cherokee Nation’s 19th Century Economy and Infrastructure was established in Executive Order 2025-04-CTH to examine the impact of enslaved labor on its 19th century economy, infrastructure, and historical narrative. This Task Force represents the Cherokee Nation’s ongoing commitment to acknowledging truth and striving for justice as we honor Freedmen descendants – their contributions and resilience – and ensure that their story remains an integral part of Cherokee history.
The Task Force sought to research all areas outlined in the executive order and developed a report that summarizes key findings and recommends further study into the role of enslaved labor in shaping the Cherokee Nation’s 19th century economic growth and infrastructure development. Its work included reviewing historical records and archival data, studying the use of enslaved labor before, during, and after removal, and assessing how enslavement is represented in Cherokee historic sites and publications, among additional areas of focus. Together, with the efforts of the Task Force, we will continue charting a more equitable future for all Cherokee Nation citizens and a stronger, more inclusive Cherokee Nation.
