The Data Sovereignty and Governance Task Force was established by Executive Order 2024-07-CTH to look towards the future to anticipate emerging technologies, provide safeguards and protection of citizens’ sensitive personal data, and define Cherokee Nation data sovereignty.

As critical infrastructure becomes more reliant on information technology and data systems, Chief Hoskin and Deputy Chief Warner are committed to making the Cherokee Nation a safer place for everyone. This executive order provides an opportunity for a coordinated effort among all Cherokee Nation departments. Together, and through the work of the Data Sovereignty and Governance Task Force, we will ensure that the Cherokee Nation works hard to meet the needs, interests, and expectations of Cherokee Nation citizens while embracing these emerging technologies.

This report contains recommendations in the critical areas of artificial intelligence, data sovereignty, and cybersecurity, and will help the Cherokee Nation to surge ahead while leveraging technology in a responsible way that helps us continue the Cherokee story of resourcefulness, resilience, and respect for our world and each other.
