TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – The Cherokee Nation recently donated vehicles to two local schools and one police department, meeting needs of the organizations.

Cherokee Nation Deputy Chief S. Joe Crittenden joined Tribal Councilors Mike Shambaugh and Rex Jordan for the donations in Tahlequah.

“It is always a great day when we can share our resources and lend a helping hand to areas of the Cherokee Nation that have a need,” Crittenden said. “Schools, law enforcement agencies and each of our public service offices are such an important part of the communities that we serve. This week we were able to contribute, and it’s always a good feeling.”

District 9 Tribal Councilor Mike Shambaugh facilitated the donation of a 2011 Honda Accord to Colcord Public Schools to be used for driver’s education and a 2008 Ford Edge to Leach Public Schools to meet a need in the administration offices.

“Vehicles are always an important resource for schools, and knowing that we were able to make a difference in two of our Delaware County schools today is a great feeling,” said Shambaugh.

District 1 Tribal Councilor Rex Jordan facilitated that donation of a 2015 Chevy Tahoe to the Hulbert Police Department, increasing the safety of officers and residents of that community.

“We are proud of what this vehicle donation means for the citizens of Hulbert,” said Jordan. “This vehicle will go a long way for the safety of both Cherokee and non-Cherokee citizens in that area, and I am always glad to support an opportunity to share our resources with our local communities.”

Each of the vehicles donated was from the Cherokee Nation Businesses fleet.

The Cherokee Nation regularly donates surplus vehicles to volunteer fire departments, police stations, schools and other community organizations throughout the tribe’s 14-county jurisdiction.
