Cherokee Nation Deputy Chief S. Joe Crittenden, Principal Chief Bill John Baker, Tribal Council Deputy Speaker Victoria Vazquez and Secretary of State Chuck Hoskin Jr. presented a $25,000 check to Big Cabin officials to help with the purchase of a new fire truck for the town’s fire department.
BIG CABIN, Okla. — Cherokee Nation officials recently presented a $25,000 check to the Big Cabin Volunteer Fire Department to help the department purchase a new fire engine.
The $25,000 donation was made from public safety and special projects funding that was requested by Tribal Council Deputy Speaker Victoria Vazquez and approved by Principal Chief Bill John Baker.
“I am so glad that the tribe was able to help the Big Cabin Volunteer Fire Department with this purchase,” said Tribal Council Deputy Speaker Victoria Vazquez. “The department covers a lot of territory, including the truck stop exit area north of town on Interstate 44. This new truck has the necessary equipment for these brave men and women to answer a call there or any location if ever needed, and that is a great thing for Cherokees and non-Cherokees alike.”
The new truck holds up to 1,500 gallons of water in addition to other features. Big Cabin Mayor Sam Yeoman said the truck means everything to the Big Cabin community.
“We are so excited to be able to purchase this truck and greatly appreciate the tribe’s help in filling the funding gap and helping us purchase it,” Yeoman said.
The donation was made weeks after the tribe presented Big Cabin and 130 other volunteer fire departments a $3,500 check at the Cherokee Nation’s annual Volunteer Firefighters Awards Ceremony. The annual donations totaled more than $458,000.
“The Cherokee Nation understands the value that the brave men and women who serve at volunteer fire departments bring to their communities,” said Secretary of State Chuck Hoskin Jr. “That makes our decision to offer support in any way we can unquestionable. We thank all the brave men and women who volunteer to ensure our protection, and I commend Deputy Speaker Vazquez for leading the effort to secure funding that helped Big Cabin purchase a needed piece of equipment.”
