Thursday night the prisoners to the number fourteen in one cell of the National Jail at this place dug out. The excavating has been going on for some time judging from the amount of work done. They removed the stone floor and sawed out some 2x6 scantling, near the wall, then dug under and up to the top of the ground on the outside of the jail. The escaped convicts were serving sentences for misdemeanors to murders. Many of them are desperate men. High Sheriff Duncan is away in Delaware District with all the horses and no one started in pursuit until after some delay. This leaves only ten convicts in the prison. Those who escaped used a pair of scissors, two or three small pieces of iron and a saw made from a table knife, in digging out.
