The Cherokee Nation first contracted to operate a WIC program in 1977. It is one of the oldest federally funded programs to come under tribal management following reorganization of the tribal government in 1971. Fulfilling the program's purpose of design, Cherokee Nation WIC draws patients into the sphere of influence of health care professionals through the food supplement program, and thus provides for the identification of children in needs of immunization and other basic health care. Since it's inception, our WIC program has shown a steady increase in the number of participants, and service site throughout the 14 county area have developed also.
