Education

The mission of the Cherokee Nation Education Division is to develop and support comprehensive social, educational and employment programs for Cherokee People. these programs will provide educational and employment opportunities that prepare tribal members for a full active life as tribal citizens as well as citizens of the United States.



The Cherokee Nation Education Corporation (CNEC) is a not-for-profit corporation chartered under tribal code of the Cherokee Nation (CN). Its mission is to offer educational assistance for tribal citizens and revitalize the language, culture, and history of Cherokee people.
Head Start serves children ages 3-5
Head start was originally launched in the summer of 1965 as an eight-week pilot program.

Administers programs for Indian students from age three (3) through grade 12 who are ΒΌ or more degree Indian or a member of a federally recognized tribe.
The Johnson - O'Malley Act was introduced in the senate as U.S. Senate Bill 2571 by Senator Hiram W. Johnson of California on February 2, 1934.
Learn and Serve America is a program of the federally funded Corporation for National and Community Service.
In 1990 Congress passed the National and Community Service Act which created the Commission on National and Community Service.

The Cherokee Nation Tribal Council passed Resolution #80-89 on Oct. 14, 1989, recognizing the youth council as a functional part of the Cherokee Nation.
The Youth Activities Unit was extracted from the Co-Partner (Johnson-O'Malley) Programs for two reasons:
Sequoyah School's approximate 300 enrollment represents 42 tribes and 14 different states. Students are eligible to attend if they are members of federally recognized Indian tribes OR one-fourth blood descendants of such members.
The Cherokee Nation's Higher Education Office awards scholarships to selected Cherokee Nation Tribal Members pursuing degrees at a college or university accredited with Carnegie units.

The Cultural Day Camp is for students coming out of Kindergarten through 4th grades. Learn about Cherokee Language History, Art, Music, Traditional games, crafts.
It shall be the policy of the Cherokee Nation to provide emergency assistance to eligible Cherokee citizens.
The purpose of the competitive Cherokee Directed Studies Scholarship Program is to provide financial assistance to deserving students pursuing higher education in a specific study area aimed at strengthening the Cherokee Nation government and economy.
The purpose of the Cherokee Nation Scholars Program is to increase the percentage of Cherokee high school graduates who are better prepared to enter college. Scholars are high school students who have completed the Scholars Course of Study, a specific sequence of academic courses in math, science, language arts and social studies.
