The purpose of the competitive Cherokee Directed Studies Scholarship Program is to provide financial assistance to students pursuing higher education in a specific study area and is aimed at strengthening the Cherokee Nation government and economy

Must be a citizen of the Cherokee Nation

Must be a resident of the fourteen-county jurisdictional area or contiguous counties

Must be a full-time student

Must be accepted in a Professional or Master Program/School

Medical Field Degrees are encouraged to apply for Indian Health Services Scholarship

Must submit official transcripts at the end of each semester Must remain "in good standing" with the University once accepted to Directed Studies Scholarship Program Must meet with program sponsor once a year Must sign a contract to work for Cherokee Nation after graduation


Selection Criteria:
Applicant’s Field of Study Meets the Need of the Cherokee Nation
Academic Performance (Transcripts)
Standardized Test Performance (ACT, SAT, GRE, MCAT, etc)
Involvement and Leadership in a Tribal Community
Leadership and Excellence in Extra-Curricular Activities
Preference will be given to speakers of the Cherokee language
Students Accepted in Master Level Program pursuing one of the Accepted Degrees for that semester

Scholarship Award:
Tuition (Amount paid will be based by the University of Oklahoma In-State tuition rate of related field)
Required Books
Required Fees
Required Equipment (No Computers, iPads, PDA)
Room/Board Allowance (University of Oklahoma housing rate)
Pre-Test, Post-Test, License Fees

Accepted Degree List:
Students who are currently enrolled or who have been recently admitted to the following programs will be eligible to apply for the Directed Studies Scholarship Program for the Fall 2014 semester.

Masters in Substance Abuse Counseling
Masters in Social Work
Doctor of Medicine
Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine
Doctor of Dental Surgery
Doctor of Dental Medicine

DEADLINE: June 6, 2014 (Must be received by this date)
