CNEC Scholarship - John Shurr Journalism Award

John Shurr Journalism Award – Available to Cherokee Nation tribal citizens who are currently enrolled as an undergraduate or a graduate student at any accredited higher education institution with a major in journalism or mass communications. Scholarship amount is $1,000 per semester or $2,000 per academic year. Student must write an essay on his/her journalism career goals, provide samples of their published writing, and maintain a 3.0 Grade Point Average to continue second semester. Student will apply for an 8-week , expense paid, summer internship with The Cherokee Phoenix newspaper in Tahlequah , Oklahoma .

  Additional Instructions to Applicants:

Applicants for the John Shurr Journalism Award are required to write a one-page, single spaced essay that discusses:

  • How your background and interests make you want to be a modern-day journalist storyteller,
  • What you hope to learn in college about journalism,
  • What you want to accomplish with a career in the news business, and
  • How your Cherokee heritage will come into play for these issues.

Applicants should also enclose two (2) samples of your writing especially something you have written for a student newspaper or any newspaper.

If you are selected for the John Shurr Journalism Award, you will be expected to arrange with Bryan Pollard , Editor, The Cherokee Phoenix , a 8-week summer internship between June - August, 2009.
