"Healthy Nation" programs are funded throughout the United States by the Robert Johnson Foundation. The Cherokee Nation/Healthy Nation program is managed through the Health Promotion/Disease Prevention Office of the Cherokee Nation Health Service, and has been providing service through area school and other wellness sites since 1992. During that time, countless people have been exposed to the concept of proactive wellness through the positive effects of exercise and other preventative activities. The program reaches people of all ages through its many facets; and, activities often place young and old together in learning, experiential situations. From walking or running to the arts of basket making and marbles, the activities of this program offer participants opportunities to improve themselves in many ways, including unlearning old habits like smoking and learning new ones such as regular exercise. In addition to the fin of the sports oriented activity, classroom settings are also used to teach participants why they should be involved in maintaining or improving their own health status, that of their community, and how they can be involved in doing so.

Visit Steps To A Healthier Cherokee Nation

Program activities include:

  • School site wellness activities, including the "Great Body Shop" health curriculum, sponsorship of the "Wings" Running Club and organization of Health Fairs.
  • Disease Prevention/Management instruction in the areas of Personal Hygiene; Diabetes; AIDS/HIV; Fetal Alcohol Syndrome.
  • Health Education in the area of Safety/Injury Prevention, Breast & Cervical Cancer Awareness, Smoking Cessation, CPR, Bystander Care.
  • Cultural Education/Activities including formation of Indian Heritage Clubs, organization of native games, i.e. stickball and marbles; and, classes in native arts, i.e. basket making, etc.
  • Sponsorship of the annual Summer Youth Fitness Camp.
  • Referral information for other tribally sponsored programs.
