IHS2.jpg The Oklahoma City Area of the USPHS/Indian Health Service include Oklahoma, Kansas and a portion of Texas, and represents the interest of many tribes.

For Example:

In all, there are 39 federally recognized Indian tribes based in the state of Oklahoma itself (appropriately named with the Choctaw words Okla-homa translated to mean "Red Man.")

The Cherokee TJSA in northeastern Oklahoma is bordered to the south by the Choctaw Nation and the West by the Creek and Chickasaw Nations, and in the northeast corner of the state is a consortium of eight other tribes. The Peoria, Seneca/Cayuga, Wyandotte, Eastern Shawnee, Quawpaw, Miami, Ottawa, and Modoc tribes are those targeted to be served primarily by the Miami Indian Health Center, an IHS managed facility located in northeastern Oklahoma just outside the Cherokee TJSA

The Indian Healthcare Resource Center, Inc. is an outpatient clinic located in Tulsa and referred to as an urban Indian health center. It is one of four urban Indian health centers located in the Oklahoma City Area.

There are 25 other IHS-funded facilities serving Indian people located throughout the state of Oklahoma in addition to those in or adjacent to the Cherokee TJSA. The Cherokee tribal registry lists more than 200,000 members, half of whom live in the 14-county TJSA.

A 1995 facilities-based count of patient charts from all of the clinical access points in the Cherokee TJSA totaled 254,569; sixty-nine percent were Cherokee and many, many other tribes were represented.

Although the entire state of Kansas is included in the "Oklahoma City Area" of the Indian Health Service, there are only four Indian health care facilities there, serving primarily the Iowa, Kickapoo, Potawatomi and Sac & Fox tribes based there.

For more information, visit the Oklahoma City Area page of the Indian Health Service website.
