History
The Cherokee Nation Education Department started in 1971 with a single Adult Education program which was center-based. Also, in the first year of operation a proposal was written under Title IV which allowed for expansion of the Adult Education program, making it a community-based Adult Education project.
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
The Program emphasizes a flexible entry/open instructional design program that allows students to enroll and begin instruction at anytime. Students study at their own pace and receive individualized and whole group instruction.
DESCRIPTION OF SERVICES
Adult Education offers a wide range of services to students entering the program. Current offerings include educational instruction in:
- Basic Skills (reading, math and writing)
- GED Preparation
- Life Skills
- Basic Literacy
- Cherokee Basket Making

- Computer Assisted Instruction
- Free Income Tax Assistance
- Assistance with G.E.D. fees
- Mileage to and from Class
- Information on programs & other services within the Cherokee Nation
Student Eligibility
- Any Indian adult sixteen (16) years of age or older is eligible to enroll in the class.
- Must have Certificate Degree of Indian Blood (CDIB) Card
- Must live in the Cherokee Nation service area that includes the 14 counties of the Cherokee Nation and those communities adjacent or continuous to the historical boundaries of the Cherokee Nation
