Cherokee Nation to Host Traditional Games Competition

WEST SILOAM SPRINGS, OK — The Cherokee Nation will host a Traditional Games Competition on Saturday, May 24, beginning at 10 a.m., at Dripping Springs Park in West Siloam Springs.

“This is a great opportunity to get involved with your community and compete in traditional games,” said Cherokee National Holiday Coordinator Lou Slagle. “We have a lot of fun holding these community competitions. I encourage everyone to come out and take part in these community games. Even if you don’t participate, they are great to watch.”

The games will be held in conjunction with the 56th Annual Cherokee National Holiday. The competition is open to children and adults and there is no cost to participate.

The Cherokee National Holiday has been held since 1953 in tribute of the signing of the 1839 Cherokee Constitution. It has grown into one of the largest events in Oklahoma, attracting more than 90,000 visitors from across the world.

Participants can compete in horseshoes, Cherokee marbles, a corn stalk shoot, a stickball competition, hatchet throwing and/or a blowgun competition.

The winners of each category will advance to the playoffs, which will be held on Sunday, August 31.

For more information contact Lou Slagle at (918) 453-1689.
