National Women’s Health Week Declared in the Cherokee Nation

TAHLEQUAH, OK — The week of May 11 - 17, 2008, has been declared as national Women’s Health Week in the Cherokee Nation by Principal Chief Chad Smith.

“The Cherokee Nation is committed to safeguarding the health of Cherokee women for this generation and for generations to come,” Smith said.  “Keeping women healthy and safe improves the health of their families and their communities.  This week will serve to remind them that taking care of themselves is important to live longer, healthier and happier lives.”

Several activities will be sponsored throughout the Cherokee Nation in recognition of the proclamation.  The Three Rivers Health Center in Muskogee will be offering a Walk for Fitness event on Monday, a health fair on Tuesday, guest speakers on Wednesday, and a healthy lunch and a presentation by the Cherokee Nation Cancer Program on Friday. 

The A-Mo Health Center in Salina, and the Bartlesville and Vinita clinics and will host displays throughout the week.  The Will Rogers Health Center in Nowata will host a Women’s Health Fair on Friday, and the Wilma P. Mankiller Health Center in Stilwell will sponsor an Employee Wellness Day on Friday, May 30.
