RAMONA, OK — The Cherokee Nation recently entered into a cross-deputization agreement with the city of Ramona.

The agreement gives local officials the right to enforce laws on Indian land and gives the Cherokee Nation Marshal Service the ability to enforce the law on non-Indian land. Not having to stop and check who has jurisdiction in an area ensures faster response times and better overall law enforcement to communities.

Major Sharon Wright of the Marshal Service said the partnership provides a way for the Marshal Service and local officials to work cooperatively together for the better good of the community.

Bradley Cobb, Cherokee Nation Tribal Council member representing North Tulsa and Washington Counties, believes the partnership is the beginning of great things between the tribe and the counties in his district.

“I’m very excited about the cross-deputization,” said Cobb. “This agreement will make things easier on law enforcement.”

“This is an important partnership,” said Buel Anglen, also representing North Tulsa and Washington Counties on the Tribal Council. “It means a lot to bring the local law enforcement on board with the Marshal Service. The tribe will have a better opportunity to learn about our communities. This is truly a great accomplishment.”

Mayor of Ramona Cyle Miller said that he looks forward to the chance to work with the Cherokee Nation and complimented the tribe on assistance the Cherokee Nation offered during times of need.

“The Cherokee Nation has been a great help in the past,” said Miller. “I believe this agreement will have a positive impact on our local community. The partnership will bring about mutual aid, which is beneficial to the Marshal Service and our local law enforcement agency.”
