Issues

The Cherokee Nation continually works to advance the rights of its citizens. Faced with government-to-government relationships and treaties dating back nearly two hundred years, the Cherokee Nation focuses much of its energy on working with the federal, state and local governments as well as other tribal governments. There have been many successes including the settlement of the Arkansas Riverbed case; Indian Child Welfare; growth of the Cherokee Nation Marshal Service and challenges to bills in Congress literally threatening to eradicate the Cherokee Nation. This page is a resource and reference regarding tribal issues currently facing the Cherokee Nation.

Fraudulent Groups
Various groups attempting to pass themselves off as tribes have become big business over the past two decades. More than two hundred of these fraudulent groups claim to be some sort of Cherokee tribe. There are only three federally-recognized Cherokee tribes: two in Oklahoma and one in North Carolina. Many of the would-be Cherokee “tribes” are actually nothing more than cultural societies or history clubs whose members may or may not belong to any federally-recognized tribes. Still others are more harmful and some are even created for criminal purposes.
