Cherokee Nation Behavioral Health partnered with Tahlequah Help-In-Crisis for the 4th annual Walk a Mile in Her Shoes at Norris Park, 400 N. Muskogee Ave, Tahlequah on Saturday April 19. Walk a Mile in Her Shoes is an international men's march to stop rape, sexual assault, and gender violence.

Cherokee Nation’s Healthy Nation hosted a traditional foods class taught by Cora Flute held at Nowata. The Traditional Foods class was part of the Community Transformation Grant through the Cherokee Nation and CDC in Atlanta. Part of the grant focuses on improving access to healthy local foods. Traditional foods like wild onions, watercress and lean game meats help promote healthy diets and living.

The Cherokee Heritage Center recently taught 1700’s Cherokee clothing class taught by National Treasure Tonia Weavel. The class was held to instruct on authentic period clothing for Cherokees during the 18th century. It included a historical overview of aboriginal, trade influenced and Cherokee adaptations to textiles.

The Cherokee Heritage Center sponsored Indian Territory Days, an educational event for school aged children on Thursday, March 27 and Friday March 28, 2014. The Center hosted 1,000 students and adults. Stations were set up so students could participate in the Cherokee culture. Pottery, basket weaving, netting, finger weaving, twining, 1890’s games like Jacob’s ladder and stations with traditional bows and tools were available for the students to watch and learn about the culture.

Cherokee Nation officials commemorated 175 years since the Trail of Tears at the Cherokee Heritage Center on Monday March 24. It was 175 years ago that the final group of Cherokees ended the journey across the Trail of Tears. The detachment arrived on March 24, 1839, in Indian Territory near present-day Tahlequah.

Cherokee Nation’s Community and Cultural Outreach program (CCO) has been hosted three college groups taking alternative spring breaks that wanted to help communities in the 14 county jurisdiction. Alternative Breaks are service-learning experiences designed to heighten participants’ awareness of critical social issues, enhance their individual growth, and prepare them for lifelong social action.

Green was the theme for St. Patrick’s Day at Cherokee Elder Care. The Turtle Pub was open to serves green non-alcoholic beer and punch along with grapes, apples and guacamole dip. A few of the participants got out on the dance floor to cut a rug and shake things up to celebrate St. Patty’s day.

“The Preventers” a Sequoyah High support group for suicide and bullying went to spread their message to fifth and sixth graders at Woodall School. Usually about 15 out the twenty something students travel around to the rural schools and talk to them about suicide prevention and bullying and ways to report it.

The Charles L. Head ONE FIRE Center has a new location on 118A East Keetoowah Street beside Tahlequah Cable. The One Fire Center assists victims of abuse and domestic violence. The services provide women and children a safe haven from dangerous situations and help them begin the healing process through our Cherokee Nation programs.

Cherokee Nation hosted the Mobile Vet Center of the Department of Veterans Affairs on Thursday February 13 at the W.W. Keeler Complex in Tahlequah. These centers provide readjustment counseling and information resources to Veterans across the country. Like community-based Vet Centers, Mobile Vet Centers focus on services that help Veterans make the difficult transition between military and civilian life.
