2013 - 14 Miss Cherokee applications now available

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. — Applications are now available for the 2013 Miss Cherokee Leadership Competition.

“Being crowned Miss Cherokee is such a rewarding experience for whomever is awarded the title,” said 2012 Miss Cherokee Christy Kingfisher. “It’s a joy to be able to share your culture and heritage with so many people, and also be an ambassador for the Cherokee Nation.”

Miss Cherokee contestants must be between the ages of 17 and 22 on Aug. 24, not have previously served as Miss Cherokee and be a Cherokee Nation tribal citizen living in the 14-county tribal jurisdiction. Contestants must also be a high school graduate or have successfully completed a GED testing program, and must not have been married or cohabitated or have children.

A young woman wishing to compete must be physically able to fulfill the duties of the position, starting with her initial official appearance on the night of the competition. Contestants will be judged on Cherokee language usage during their introductive and cultural presentation.

Contestants must submit the following documents, along with their Miss Cherokee Competition 2013 application form: copy of CDIB card, copy of tribal citizenship card, copy of most recent transcript or GED scores, one 3x5 color photograph and three letters of recommendation from non-family community members.

Applicants will receive notification that they are an official candidate for the 2013 Miss Cherokee Leadership Competition. The official contestants will be required to attend an orientation for an overview of the activities that will be occurring during the competition.

The application and requested items must be mailed and received with a postmark of Friday, July 12. Hand-carried or faxed applications will not be accepted.
