TAHLEQUAH, Okla. — The Cherokee Nation donated nearly $60,000 to law enforcement agencies in Cherokee County on Wednesday.

The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Department received a $33,000 donation. Tahlequah Police Department and Hulbert Police Department each received $12,526. The donation comes from revenue generated by the Cherokee Nation’s motor vehicle tax.

“Ensuring our local law enforcement agencies are adequately funded and equipped for safety is critically important for the Cherokee Nation,” said Cherokee Nation Tribal Councilor David Walkingstick. “Local law enforcement agencies selflessly put themselves in harm’s way to make certain citizens know their community is safe. Cherokee Nation money helps these agencies protect and serve our communities to the fullest extent.”

The Tahlequah Police Department plans to use the funds to establish another K-9 unit.

“The Cherokee Nation donation to the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Department is extremely helpful, and we are very thankful,” said Cherokee County Sheriff Norman Fisher. “The partnership with the Cherokee Nation means a lot to the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Department, not only because of donated funding but also the partnership with the Cherokee Nation Marshal Service, which nearly doubles or triples our law enforcement in Cherokee County.”

Revenue from the Cherokee Nation’s motor vehicle tax is used to fund law enforcement, road and bridge construction, and schools within the Cherokee Nation. Millions of dollars are distributed annually to each of those programs.
