TAHLEQUAH, Okla. — The Cherokee Nation was recently awarded $2,577,845 for new health equipment at W.W. Hastings Hospital and four tribal health centers through a grant from Indian Health Services.
The awarded funds from the IHS Oklahoma City Area Office supplement the $6 million the Cherokee Nation Tribal Council redirected for new health equipment and supplies last month.
“The Cherokee Nation’s mission is to increase access to quality care for Cherokee people, and the Indian Health Services investment will allow us to provide more essential services for more families,” said Cherokee Nation Principal Chief Bill John Baker. “The additional IHS funding helps provide state-of-the-art medical equipment for our people, because every Cherokee citizen deserves the best possible health care we can provide.”
W.W. Hastings Hospital, the new Sam Hider Health Center in Jay and the new Cooweescoowee Health Center in Ochelata will receive a portion of the grant money. Redbird Smith Health Center in Sallisaw and Wilma P. Mankiller Health Center in Stilwell also will receive funds for new equipment in their respective expansion projects.
The more than $2.5 million from IHS coupled with the $6 million redirected by the Tribal Council will purchase state-of-the-art radiology equipment, as well as dental equipment, wheelchairs, defibrillators and more.
“The IHS grant money is an enormous blessing for Cherokee Nation Health Services and the Cherokee people,” said Connie Davis, executive director of Cherokee Nation Health Services. “The Cherokee Nation will have new health facilities opening over the next year, and our citizens deserve the best equipment to go along with them. New facilities and state-of-the-art equipment allow Cherokee Nation Health Services to continue to better the lives of our citizens and be the leader in health care throughout Indian Country.”
W.W. Hastings Hospital and the four health centers will receive the following amount from IHS:
• W.W. Hastings Hospital - $910,645
• Sam Hider Health Center - $469,203
• Redbird Smith Health Center - $402,293
• Cooweescoowee Health Center - $397,852
