TAHLEQUAH, Okla. — The Cherokee Nation will honor Cherokee warriors and all veterans who made the ultimate sacrifice in a wreath-laying ceremony at 3:30 p.m., Friday, in recognition of Memorial Day.
“This Memorial Day, we encourage you to honor the men and women who fought and died for our freedoms,” said U.S. Navy veteran and Cherokee Nation Deputy Chief S. Joe Crittenden. “Their sacrifices and their commitment should be honored with absolute respect and admiration. It is only proper that our Cherokee warriors hold an esteemed place in our tribe and within our families.”
The ceremony will be held at the Cherokee Warrior Memorial, next to the new Cherokee Nation Veterans Center. It will include the raising of the flags, performances by the Cherokee National Youth Choir and remarks by Principal Chief Bill John Baker and Deputy Chief S. Joe Crittenden.
Tours of the new Veterans Center and a small reception will also be held following the ceremony. For more information about veterans services, call 918-453-5000 ext. 6147 or ext. 5695.
