Sequoyah High School names Herrin as valedictorian

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. — Tahlequah native Baylee Herrin, who has a 4.25 GPA, has been named Sequoyah High School’s valedictorian for the graduating class of 2014.

Herrin, the president of Fellowship of Christian Athletes, a volleyball middle blocker and student council representative, will give her valedictorian speech during Sequoyah High School’s graduation ceremony at 6:30 p.m., Friday, May 16, at The Place Where They Play gym. Sequoyah will graduate 89 seniors in its 2014 class.

“I’ve always been very determined to do my best in whatever I put my time into, whether it’s academics, sports or something else, because my parents raised me that way,” Herrin said.

Herrin, a Cherokee citizen, plans to attend Northeastern State University in the fall. She already has 18 hours of classes completed from NSU through the high school’s concurrent enrollment program. She plans on studying optometry.

Melody Proctor, 18, of Tahlequah, is the class salutatorian with a 4.23 GPA.

The yearbook editor and cheerleading manager will have 15 hours of college credit completed from NSU by graduation. She plans to attend the University of Oklahoma this fall and is undecided on a major.
