Cherokee Nation Gaming Commission raises 3,000 dollars for Angel Tree

The Cherokee Nation Gaming Commission Tahlequah staff headed by Commissioner Jamie Hummingbird, center right, donated $3,000 to the Angel Tree program Tuesday. Principal Chief Bill John Baker, center left, and Angel Tree organizers Brandy Lemley, front row right and Sally Wilson, third row left, accepted the check.

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. —The Cherokee Nation Gaming Commission Tahlequah office raised $3,000 for this year’s Angel Tree, just by wearing jeans to work throughout the year.

The staff of 27 started a donation fund in January with the option to pay $2 a day or $20 per month to wear jeans to the office, which ended up tripling the $900 raised in previous years.

The group handed over a check Tuesday to Angel Tree organizers for the charity program that helps ensure more than 2,000 Cherokee children receive clothes and gifts for Christmas.

“During the holidays is a great time to make a donation and give back,” said Gaming Commission Director Jamie Hummingbird. “Angel Tree is something we’ve been involved with for a number of years, a charity that we know helps so many of our Cherokee children.”

Eligible parents have until Friday to apply for the program at the Cherokee Nation in Tahlequah. The public and Cherokee Nation employees will be able to adopt an “angel” during and after the official kickoff, which is from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. Nov. 26 at the W.W. Keeler Complex.

“When we deliver gifts to smiling Cherokee kids, it means the world,” Cherokee Nation Principal Chief Bill John Baker said. “The generosity of our community and our employees here at the Cherokee Nation, such as the Gaming Commission, means every child with an angel on the tree has their Christmas wish granted.”

Anyone wishing to donate locally can pick up an angel at the Cherokee Nation in Tahlequah, or those outside of Oklahoma who want to make monetary, toy or clothing donations can participate by calling 918-266-5626 or 918-458-6900.
