CN Housing Authority opens waiting list for Delaware Muskogee and Rogers counties

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. — The Housing Authority of the Cherokee Nation will temporarily open Tuesday, Nov. 12, the Mutual Help/Rural Rental Homeownership waiting list for qualified Native American families in Delaware, Muskogee and Rogers counties to apply.

HACN staff will distribute and accept applications for three- and four-bedroom homes beginning at 9 a.m. at the Jay, Sallisaw and Claremore offices for the respective counties or contact the Tahlequah office. Only the first 25 applications will be accepted at each office, and applicants seeking a four-bedroom unit must have a household of six.

The Housing Authority of the Cherokee Nation owns or manages more than 1,200 units across the tribe’s 14-county jurisdiction.

“From time to time some of those homes are placed back into our inventory, we renovate them to return them to new or like new condition, and we offer a good home to the next eligible family on our waiting list,” said HACN Executive Director Gary Cooper.

The waiting list will be open in those counties one day only, or until the first 25 applicants are filled.

The head of the household or spouse must be a citizen of a federally recognized tribe and meet income and other requirements. Cherokee preference will apply, but applicants from all federally recognized tribes are welcome to complete the application for housing.

Applicants should bring the following items: Cherokee Nation tribal citizenship card, Social Security card for each person in the household, a copy of driver’s license or state-issued identification for all those 18 years of age or older in the home, a copy of marriage license or divorce decree, and proof of income for all individuals who will live in the home.
