About The Nation

The Cherokee Nation is the federally-recognized government of the Cherokee people and has inherent sovereign status recognized by treaty and law. The seat of tribal government is the W.W. Keeler Complex near Tahlequah, Okla., the capital of the Cherokee Nation. With more than 300,000 citizens, over 8,000 employees and a variety of tribal enterprises ranging from aerospace and defense contracts to entertainment venues, Cherokee Nation’s economic impact in Oklahoma and surrounding areas is more than $1.5 billion annually. We are one of the largest employers in northeastern Oklahoma. We are the largest tribal nation in the United States.


Annual Reports
The Cherokee Nation continually provides its citizens with access to information about the tribes growth, successes and annual budgets. The Cherokee Nation is also required through so federal grants to provide annual reports of specific programs.

Culture
What it means to be Cherokee today is the legacy of those things we've honored, cherished and nurtured since our earliest times. From the way we lived, the way we played, the way we worshipped from time immemorial spring all of those attributes which make The Cherokee Nation strong today.

History
The history of the Cherokee Nation is rich and colorful tapestry spreading over time, covering our culture from its beginnings in North Carolina and Georgia to the time of the Trail of Tears and the Golden Age in Indian Territory. Continuing to be woven today by dynamic economic, cultural and social growth as a truly sovereign nation, the story of the Cherokee Nation is one of an engergetic player on today's world stage.

National Holiday
The Cherokee National Holiday, celebrated each year since 1953, commemorates the anniversary of the signing of the 1839 Cherokee Constitution. With an exciting selection of entertainment, cultural and athletic events, it has grown into one of the largest annual festivals in Oklahoma, attracting nearly 100,000 visitors from around the world.
