Cherokee Artisans who have shown exceptional skill, cultural and historical knowledge will be honored as Cherokee National Living Treasures/Master Craftsmen at the holiday.
The awards will be presented at the Cherokee Courthouse Square at noon following the state of the nation address on Sept. 1.
The National Living Treasures project is designed to honor Cherokee craftspeople and artisans who are committed to education and cultural preservation. Primary emphasis is given to those crafts or arts produced in the traditional manner using native materials.
The Cherokee Nation and the Cherokee National Historical Society officially designate the Living National Treasures. Since 1988 when the project began, 53 Cherokees have been so honored.
