Syllabary Song

The famous Cherokee known as Sequoyah invented the Cherokee Syllabary. He is the only man in history known to have invented a writing system single-handedly. The Syllabary consists of 85 distinct syllables, or sounds, that the Cherokee language is comprised of. A copy of the syllabary can be found HERE (Syllabary_Song.mp3), and if you are singing along, it reads from left to right on the syllabary chart.

The song was arranged and performed by Lisa LaRue (Stopp) of the Cherokee Nation Cultural Resource Center. She is an internationally known composer/keyboardist/recording artist. She recently completed a project with Muskogee (Creek) flutist/guitarist John "Yafke" Timothy which will soon be released. Her debut album, "Beloved Tribal Women," which was on the Sound of American Records label, was recently re-released by Blue Line Music as part of the Native American Series and is available exclusively at Wal-Marts throughout the US and the Internet.
