David W. Thornton resides in Vian. He and his wife of 35 years, Gladys, have two sons and five grandchildren. Thornton is a graduate of Vian High School and also attended Connors State College in Warner and Northeastern State University in Tahlequah, where he studied business and tourism management.
He worked for the Oklahoma Tourism and Recreation Department for 27 years before retiring as park manager at Tenkiller State Park in September 1997. As park manager, he managed an annual budget in excess of $1.1 million. He is also C.L.E.E.T. certified, as a law enforcement officer by the State of Oklahoma.
Thornton is a past president of the Oklahoma Park Managers Association and also served 10 years as a member of the Vian Public Schools Board of Education.
