Taylor Keen was born and raised in Tahlequah, Oklahoma and is descended from the Taylor, Cochran and lower Shell Cherokee families near Stilwell, Oklahoma. A graduate of the Tahlequah public school system, Taylor holds a Bachelor's degree from Dartmouth College as well as a Master's of Business Administration and Masters of Public Policy from Harvard University, where he served as a Christian Johnson Fellow in the Harvard Project on American Indian Economic Development.

Upon returning home to the Cherokee Nation in 2001, Taylor has served in various management positions in Cherokee owned corporations, with the bulk of the time as a Vice President at Cherokee Nation Enterprises, where he spearheaded the development of the Cherokee Casino and Resort, the Nation's flagship resort near Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Keen currently serves as an adjunct professor at the University of Tulsa's School of Business and is author of the article "Tribal Sovereignty and Economic Development," which will be published for the Smithsonian Institution's Handbook of the American Indian.

Keen has been active with the Tulsa Metro Chamber's Young Professionals Organization as a member of its leadership team and a past chair of the diversity committee. Taylor also served as a board member of the Tulsa Metro American Heart Association and was sponsorship chairman of Heart Walk. In addition, Keen serves on the board of Indian Film LLC, the Board of Directors of the American Indian Chamber of Commerce of Oklahoma, an advisory member of the International Cherokee Film Festival and is a volunteer instructor for the Cherokee History Course Project.

Taylor is the son of the late Ralph F. Keen, former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the Cherokee Nation, and of Octa L. Keen of Omaha, Nebraska. Taylor's siblings include Ralph Keen, John Keen and Emerald Keen.
